Replace a pneumatic air filter element according to the exact manufacturer's service instructions, including any time limit, differential-pressure limit or condition-based requirement. Do not wait for a machine to stop, and do not treat a low pressure drop as proof that the element is healthy. For XMC HDAF or HDAFM, confirm the correct element, grade and service instructions for the supplied model rather than borrowing another manufacturer's interval.
Start with the exact element's replacement rule
Identify the complete housing model, installed element and date placed in service. Then obtain the relevant operation and maintenance instructions. SMC's published element list shows that replacement rules are associated with particular product families and elements. [2] The XMC catalogue pages reviewed for this guide provide selection data, but do not establish one universal replacement interval for every HDAF and HDAFM installation. [1] If the service instruction is missing, ask XMC to confirm it using the model and order details. An online rule such as replace annually or replace at a particular pressure drop should not be transferred to an unverified element.
Understand the limits of differential pressure
Differential pressure is the difference between inlet and outlet pressure across the component being measured. SMC describes differential-pressure gauges and service indicators for specified filter families. [3] Parker's maintenance guidance explains that filter pressure drop depends on operating flow and that low differential pressure is not a measurement of filtration integrity or outlet-air quality. Media deterioration may not create the high pressure drop an operator expects. [4] Use the reading alongside the exact service rule and, where required, an appropriate air-quality measurement. Do not extend a specified service interval solely because the indicator remains low.
Measure the filter stage under comparable conditions
For a useful maintenance record, identify the pressure measurement points and the operating flow at the time of the reading. Use the same filter stage and a comparable production condition for later comparisons. A reading taken across an entire filter-regulator assembly includes the regulator's intended pressure reduction and cannot be treated as the filter element's pressure drop. Likewise, a reading recorded while the machine is idle cannot simply be compared with one taken during peak demand. Have qualified personnel establish appropriate measurement points without modifying a pressurised assembly.
Match the observation to the next check
Use the following as an inspection worksheet, not as a substitute for the element manufacturer's replacement criteria. Record the evidence before deciding whether the required action is element replacement, drain service, a supply review or an air-quality investigation. This makes the maintenance decision easier to explain and avoids repeatedly changing parts without resolving the reported problem.
| Observation | Check next | Record before action |
|---|---|---|
| Pressure drop has increased under comparable demand | Element condition and the model-specific service limit | Inlet/outlet readings, flow condition and earlier baseline |
| Low pressure drop but outlet air fails its requirement | Element identity, installation and the complete treatment arrangement | Test method, sampling point and required quality |
| Bowl liquid does not discharge as expected | The fitted drain and its operating instructions | Drain type, observed behaviour and discharge arrangement |
| Calendar or service-life limit has been reached | The applicable replacement instruction | Installation date and last service date |
| Element age or part number is unknown | Order records and supplier confirmation | Housing label, photographs and available maintenance history |
Keep drain and drying problems in the investigation
A wet downstream hose or a bowl that remains full is not enough to identify an element fault. Record the drain observations and the location where liquid appears. If vapour condenses later in the line, the drying and temperature conditions also need review. Replacing an element without recording those observations makes it difficult to determine whether the original complaint changed. Keep element servicing on its required schedule while investigating the separate symptom.
Confirm the replacement grade and compatibility
XMC lists HDAF at 25 μm standard with 5 μm and 50 μm options, while HDAFM is a separate mist-separator family listed at 0.3 μm. [1] Provide the complete model and original element information when ordering. Confirm the part number, filtration duty, grade and any required seals with the supplier. Similar outside dimensions do not establish compatibility. If machine demand has changed, request a sizing review instead of substituting a coarser element merely to reduce resistance; that would also change the filtration specification.
Use a short service record for the next inspection
Keep one record with the machine or maintenance system and update it whenever an element is fitted or inspected. The format below is an original worksheet for discussing the installation with the supplier. It deliberately leaves limits and due dates to the applicable service instruction. After maintenance, record the prescribed functional checks and any required air-quality verification; the completed entry should explain why the equipment was returned to service.
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Equipment and filter identity | Machine/branch ID, complete housing model, element part number and grade |
| Service basis | Instruction document/revision and applicable replacement criteria |
| Dates | Element installed, inspected and replaced; next action due |
| Operating check | Measurement points, inlet/outlet pressures, flow or production condition |
| Drain and air-quality observations | Drain operation and any required quality-test results and sampling location |
| Action and verification | Parts used, work performed, checks completed and responsible person |
Do not assume an element can be washed and reused
Use a cleaning method only when the instruction for that exact element explicitly allows it. Parker warns that washing can damage the media in the elements covered by its guidance; this is not permission to apply one cleaning rule to every XMC element. [4] Before opening a filter, authorised maintenance personnel must isolate the supply, prevent unexpected machine movement, depressurise the relevant circuit and verify the safe state in accordance with the equipment procedure. Ask XMC for the correct replacement and service instructions if the element cannot be identified.
Catalogue and technical references
XMC specifications are taken from the 21 June 2025 catalogue. SMC and Parker references support general maintenance distinctions; their element part numbers, numerical service limits and replacement intervals are not assigned to XMC. The inspection and service-record tables are practical worksheets, not model-specific maintenance instructions.
Questions buyers ask.
How often should I replace an XMC HDAF filter element?
Follow the service instruction for the exact supplied model and element. The catalogue reviewed here does not establish one interval for every HDAF installation. Send XMC the complete model, element details and operating conditions for confirmation.
Does low differential pressure mean the element is still good?
No. Pressure drop is affected by flow and does not directly prove filtration integrity or air quality. Keep the manufacturer's service requirements and any required quality checks in the decision.
Can I measure element pressure drop across the whole FRL?
Not as a direct element reading. Other stages, including the regulator, affect the pressure difference. Identify suitable points across the filter stage and record a comparable operating condition.
Can I clean the element instead of replacing it?
Only if the instructions for that exact element permit cleaning and specify the method. Do not assume that washing or blowing through an unidentified element makes it suitable for reuse.
What information does XMC need for a replacement-element inquiry?
Provide the housing's complete model, original order or element part number, filtration grade, installation age, operating conditions and the observed problem. Include clear label photographs and ask for the applicable service instructions.
